River Wey

The River Wey.

11th February 2024.

On Sunday morning the paddlers met at the Rowbarge Inn only to find the river was down about 18 inches below normal levels and was pushing through at quite a pace.

Jai led this trip as part of his leadership training and assessed the situation.

A full safety brief was given including a kit check, a warm up, a route and conditions briefing and making sure everyone had enough refreshments and of course their lunch.

Deciding to enter the river at a slightly lower area and using all the paddlers to assist one another until we were all on the water, including Coco and Fifi Phillips two dogs.

Heading upstream into the flow, it was quite a workout to gain a forward motion and using the inside of the bends and tailgating each other in turn for some easier paddling and under Jai’s instruction we found a rhythm and continued to progress making headway.

Various other paddlers were also on the water, mainly from the several rowing clubs situated along the banks.

Ferry gliding from one side to the other also made the route a tiny bit shorter that was welcomed by all when we stopped for lunch.

The weather was lovely (although not Dave’s trip), the sun was out, we had no wind, and mostly clear skies, Jai obviously follows on the Davepaddles trend of great weather to paddle (no matter what).

JAI

The return journey was a pleasant steer rather than a paddle due to the pace of the flow.

Returning to the get in point we ventured downstream a bit further following the navigation signs and were pleasantly surprised at the lack of flow, most of the water going to the old mill stream.

Another great trip with friends, Led exceptionally by Jai, Great company, Great conversation, and Great weather.

We debriefed in the Rowbarge with a beverage to say Thank You for letting us park and embark on this trip.

Trip planning goes on behind every trip and Jai had called ahead and gained permission for the use of the launch and car park.

Almost everyone I have ever called in the planning of a trip has been welcoming and accommodating so it’s only right to show them some support afterwards.

THANK YOU to the Rowbarge Inn.
