Return To the Thames- Marlow To Cookham 6th April 2025

It was a Dave Paddles weather day as we returned to the Thames River for another section. The weather and strong flows in the winter had restricted our opportunities to safely do trips on the Thames so it was nice to get back on this beautiful river.

An early start from Hemel/Watford should have been reflected in our entry to the water but moving the cars to the end point with our shuttle driver, Graham, was severely delayed by an accident. The entry to a local bridge that is protected by width restrictions, was battered by a couple in a hire car when they decided to hit it rather than simply go through the middle, and then sit there in wonderment for quite a while before being encouraged to clear the way!

So 1030 on the water was later than planned.  There is a lock portage immediately at the start of this section but luckily for us a large cruiser turned up so we joined it going through the lock.  It was a perfect day for a paddle

The Thames is still flowing steadily, so helpful, and there was a cloudless sky without it being too hot.  The first half of the trip was into a steady breeze that created waves flowing towards us so we bounced along like we were in the constant wake of a power boat.

Then the wind settled and we travelled smoothly.  We passed many beautiful houses and several mansions. On the water we saw several Yachts making good use of the steady wind, boarders and the occasional moving power craft (hundreds more simply parked up) as we made our way along. And of course we saw the iridescent blue of a Kingfisher and a less colourful Giraffe with a Lion friend.

The weather brought out many walkers, runners and cyclists so the banks were very busy. As usual Phil’s three girls were a significant attraction for all, and created lots of smiles and entertainment. However, the two young’uns behave like they wish to take on every dog they see so Phil sometimes chose the opposite side of the river to avoid dogs and keep the peace.

The river was nice and clean, and there was clear evidence in the trees and bushes of some of the heights it had reached during the winter, as well as several sunken boats.

The trip completed at 1230 at the Ferry Inn where there is a public slipway. The pub provided a good place for a drink and a debrief.

A good day out and a return to the Thames that should be the first of many.
