Bewl Water Swim Run

On Sat 16th and Sunday 17th Sept.

Davepaddles.co.uk went to Bewl Water to assist ‘As Keen as Mustard’ with the one of many swim Runs they do throughout the year.

We assisted as on the water Safety and Rescue Marshals.

On this occasion most of our group were not available as holidays and commitments were in the way.

But Dave and Phillip stood in on behalf of the whole group and had such a great time.

It was an early morning start, 7.15 to pick up kit and radios, and prep.

Dave had opted to stay in the Camper at T and J’s Motel and Camping and as usual done a full risk assessment by walking the various areas that we would be paddling.

Whilst Phillip went to a party before and had opted for a Hotel nearby that he didn’t get to until late on the Sat night. (So he went straight to bed)

6am up and ready to head to the water, it was pretty majestically lit at that time of the morning as we are slipping into the autumn and some of the pictures taken seem amazing.

Phillip and Dave were Swim team 6 which was a good 45 min paddle from the get in at the rowing club, past the 2nd headland just visible in the photo above.

All kitted up with High Vis, Snack packs, Lunch, and fluids we set off.

At this point the water was calm, the temperature was comfortable 18 degrees with only a slight breeze.

Arriving at our location We had a radio check and it turned out we was in a blackspot, so we resorted to whats app and that worked really well and kept us in touch with the command HQ.

Our job was to be the water safety for about 150 swimmers either doing a 5k 10k or 21k race, the swimmers were identified by the colour of their swim hat.

All the swim teams did an amazing job, covering more than 1 leg of the race.

It was a brilliant day on the water, with great people. There were too many to name, lots of friendships were made, and another well organised event by the team at ‘AKA Mustard.’

The water was a bit choppy and the wind had picked up a touch for our return journey, but it was great playing on some waves.
